Forklift Accident Survivor Loren Schauers Shares Story of Resilience and Hope
A young man who survived a horrific forklift accident has shared his story of resilience and hope. In September of 2019 Loren Schauers who was just 18 years old at the time was operating a forklift on a bridge in the United States when the machinery veered off the bridge and plummeted 50 feet to the ground. Schauers was tragically crushed by the four-ton forklift and suffered life-changing injuries.
Schauers was trapped under the forklift and pinned to the ground and the only way to save his life was through a risky surgical procedure called hemicorporectomy. This procedure involved amputating everything below his waist including his legs and right forearm.
Remarkably Schauers who is now 21 years old has survived the shocking ordeal and has learned to live with his injuries. He is cared for by his loving wife Sabia Reiche and has become an inspiration to many.
Recently Schauers shared his story on an online platform revealing that he begged the doctors to save him even if it meant he was left with just a head. He fought hard to stay alive during the surgery and his resilience proved to be a source of hope for his family.
Reiche Schauers' wife shared what it was like for their family following the accident and the subsequent surgery. She revealed that Schauers' mother had power of attorney before the surgery which meant she had to make the difficult decision about undergoing the amputation to save Schauer's life.

"We were all like super shocked and none of us knew how to react and none of us knew how Loren would react because he’s an 18-year-old guy living life to the full" she said. "And so there were fears in our heads that he wouldn’t want this surgery or would rather die than lose half of his body. But his sister really fought hard to let him make that decision."
Eventually the family did decide to undergo the surgery a decision that proved to be the right one for Schauers. As he came round from the surgery he faced a long and difficult recovery but his fighting spirit was clear from the beginning.
"I knew he wasn’t going anywhere because he looked them dead in the eye and told them he didn’t care if he was just a head on a plate they’re going to do the surgery and they’re going to keep him alive. That really brought a lot of hope for us that he was a fighter but we already knew that because he was still alive" Reiche said.
Today Schauers is determined to use his experience to inspire others and has become an advocate for people with disabilities. He hopes to one day become a motivational speaker and his story is proof that anything is possible if you have the will to fight.
Schauers' story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope. His bravery in the face of such a devastating injury is an inspiration to all who face adversity. The road to recovery may be long and difficult but with hope and determination anything is possible.
